Ebic Courses

Since the onset of COVID, I have transferred all professional teaching online through a series of courses on curriculum development. These are offered both in English and Italian and are now approaching their fourth year of running. The Early Behavioural Intervention Curriculum (EBIC) course sequence is divided into three modules, each targeting a learner’s profile: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

Each module focuses on guiding practitioners to understand the controlling variables of any given skill and to derive effective procedures to promote generative behaviour across developmental areas. Although the framework is entirely behavioural in both scope and content, it also heavily draws on principles of childhood development.

Each course offers 18 or 16 CEUs and it is delivered through a mixture of pre-recorded and live classes. The entire sequence runs only once per year and each class is limited to 30 practitioners to provide a fully interactive experience and case discussion.

A curricular framework for understanding and teaching verbal and social behaviour, from theory to practice

The course aims to provide practitioners with the tools to derive procedures from a conceptual analysis of verbal behaviour, childhood development and the universal and syndrome-specific learning challenges of children with ASD. The course modules will accompany participants on a journey of the controlling variables that govern the development of a range of important repertoires that are typically compromised in ASD, from joint attention to theory of mind, naming and multiply controlled generative verbal behaviour.

Plan of the Courses

The course is organised in three modules. Participants will be able to register for each module separately:
1. Beginner,
2. Intermediate,
3. Advanced.

Each module consists in a total of 8 weeks and is organised in this way:

  • week 1, 3, 5, 7 – participants will have access to two hours of pre-recorded material to view at their own convenience. Pre-recorded lectures will be availabe for 6 months after the end of the course;
  • week 2, 4, 6, 8 – we will have a live class to review videos and discuss application of the pre-recorded content and procedures.

Participants will receive, as part of the course, the Early Behavioural Intervention Curriculum Checklists (EBIC), a framework for organizing the fundamental social and verbal skills of existing published curricula under their common sources of control.

The EBIC is not a curriculum, but rather, a framework of cumulative and generalized skills, sequentially arranged and derived from Skinner’s analysis of multiple causation, the establishment of which can be attained through delivery of a range of procedures to promote the emergence of social and generative verbal behavior.

The EBIC is therefore a curricular framework for understanding skills regardless of a particular manual or theoretical orientation. This framework will be used to guide participants in the design and arrangement of objectives in a developmental coherent sequence to obtain the greatest gains in novel, untaught, skills from the minimum amount of direct teaching across both naturalistic and structured environments and across varying complexities of stimulus control.
